Back during the 1970's I read both
volumes I and II of David Wallechinsky's and Amy Wallace's "Book Of
List's." These books had the Top Ten of all kinds of subjects and
topics, from movie stars, personalities, and people of interest.
These were not a book of world record top ten's, but top ten, in
the opinion of, about various funny and interesting topics and
subjects, in these contributors own opinion. What you will read
below, so to say, is my own Top Ten, as to how it relates to this
web site.
Please enjoy..................

Nothing for me compares to the films
of the 1940's and 1950's. Olivia DeHavilland and Errol Flynn, made
many of the most romantic and funniest films in film history. Real
films, that much like what "I Love Lucy and the Andy Griffith Show",
did back then and today for television, is simply good
entertainment.
"Jaws" and "Saturday Night Fever"
are timeless. Each film, especially being filmed totally on
location, speaks for that generation. I feel each of the
films above should be seen at least once by those who enjoy
watching a great film.

***these are studio songs. Live
songs take on an entire different life as anyone knows who ever has
seen Springsteen live.
I feel The Rolling Stones is the
greatest band in the world, Led Zeppelin is the most requested band
in the world, KISS puts on the finest live show in the world, and
The Beatles were the BEST
band in the world. John Lennon and Paul McCartney bar none
will always be considered the best song writing
team of all time (Elton John and Bernie Taupin second, with Don
Henley and Glen Frey a distant third) I feel the greatest individual
song writer is Bruce Springsteen, with Paul McCartney, post Beatles,
a very close second.
My musical taste is so diverse. I
like the bubble gum songs of the 70's, but avoid the bubble gum
songs of the 60's like the plague. I enjoy disco hits, new wave, big
bands, movie themes, and instrumentals. I love hard rock, but stay
away from most metal.
Rap is crap (and always will be). I
enjoy seeing the music I hear.
I cannot stand stage background track
singers (Robert Plant, on "Heaven Knows"), or hearing violins and
trumpets that are no where found on stage. I like rock bands playing
with a country type flare, The Rolling Stones are a prime example,
and even Led Zeppelin a bit on "Hot Dog", did it so well.

For me, the term ONE HIT WONDER is
so overused and left to interpretation. Does it mean a band that had
only one real song on the radio and no others, is a one hit wonder,
or a band that only had one top ten hit a one hit wonder? For me, a
one hit wonder is a band that rests it's career only on that one
song that brought them any real success, then they quietly slipped
away into rock and roll lore.
There are so many, literally
hundreds and hundreds of bands or artists from the 1970's that had
that real quick rise to the top, then never really heard from them
again. Not mentioned above, are any of all those Disco artists that
had that one song that we all know real well. I could easily list 50
of what consider are my favorite favorite songs from the 1970's.
A word of note on the 1970 song
Venus, by the Shocking Blue: Lead singer was the very beautiful
Mariska Veres. Though Venus was the only real hit that the Dutch
band had here in the states, in Europe they had many more hits. Very
sadly, this great unique voice, died of cancer December 2, 2006.
Mariska was only 59 years old. Needless to say, I am a big fan of
hers.

It's always a fun time during
December to hear all the radio stations dusting off those very fun
rock and roll Christmas songs. I always have preferred the original
written songs as opposed to the cover songs, however either way, the
10 listed above are the 10 I feel I just can't go a Christmas season
without hearing at least once. |
